How do you get to school?
April 14
Our tally for how we get to school....
Bus - 13
Walk - 4
Car - 4
How many classes are in your school? We will ask our secretary for that information and will get back to you!
Do you have a large playground? Yes we do have a large playground. We have a black top that has some basketball nets. We also have big field. We don't have play structures yet. Close to our school is a park that has a large pond. We can walk around it and see lots of birds.
Is there a lot of traffic?
There is alot of traffic on the road that leads to Ducharme (it is called the 6th concession). Right now t ere is only one way to get into our school area.
What kinds of transportation are available in Windsor? -trains (VIA rail) -city buses -boats (we are on the Detroit river) -bikes -cars -taxis - planes (Windsor has it's own airport)
If you are in a school which is only five years old, we think you must be in a fairly new area of Windsor. Is this correct? Yes. We are in a newer subdivision in South Windsor. What kinds of homes are in your area? (Detached homes, semi-detached, townhouses, apartments?) -single family homes -we also have a trailer park that is north of us as well.
This is a picture of area across from our school. We are in a developing subdivision filled will single family homes. There is still lots of land for future homes!
This is the public park next to our school. You can see the Lowe's building which is located on Provincial Road.
We noticed that your city is very close to Detroit in the USA. Do you go across the border very often? Yes a lot of us do. 6 students have a family member that works over in Detroit. We visit Detroit a lot. Sometimes for shopping, getting gas and entertainment (Detroit Red Wing fans!)
Questions for you...Apr. 27
We wonder why your families chose to live in an urban community? We think that people choose Windsor because:
-more homes to choose from, more schools, safer as emergency services are closer, more friends since we may live in a subdivision with other children our age, we may have moved because other family members live here, lots of stores to shop at, urban communities have what we need and what we want, neighbours are close to borrow things we may need, many jobs to choose from in an urban community.
Is your city and school very multi-cultural?
YES! In our class we have children that are from - India, Vietnam, China, Jordan, Egypt, Serbia, Europe, Jamaica, Germany, Portugal, Pakistan, Italy, United States
How is land used in Windsor?
1. Commercial land use - Forr example - Lots of Tim Horton's, Home Depot, Toys R Us, Devonshire Mall, Sears, Zellers, The Bay, grocery stores such as Metro, Superstore and Sobey's
2. Industrial land use - Car factories (Chrysler, Ford, and General Motors). The car industry is a major employer of Windsor families.
3. Recreation land use - parks, Community centres(pools) , bowling alleys, movie theatres, baseball diamonds, arenas ( we have an OHL hockey team called the Windsor Spitfires).
4. Residential land use - lots of apartment buildings, single family homes, duplexes, townhouses, semi-detached homes
5. Institutional land use - schools, (elementary and high schools), St.Clair College and the University of Windsor, 3 hospitals and many medical buildings, we have a mayor so there is also a large city centre downtown
We are also on the Detroit river so many of the industries can use the water to transport their goods. Many big ships use this water way to get to/from Lake Erie.
Are there many trees or open spaces? No there are not since the land is not used for that purpose. Urban communities have less and less open space since it is taken up by other land uses. We have trees on our front lawns but many of the new develpments have small trees that will take a long time to grow. The older areas of Windsor have nice big trees.
What kinds of buildings do you have in Windsor?- (Lots of examples above) We have buildings for industry, businesses such as Lowe's, Costco, Home Depot, Staples, Walmart, restaurants such as McDonald's, Taco Bell and Burger King, Applebees, Montanas and Kelseys, Lots of office buildings for doctors, lawyers, real estate etc, post office, bus station, libraries, schools, homes, retirement homes, 3 hospitals, Farmer's market downtown, banks, - there are so many in an urban community!!!!
How many hospitals do you have? 3
What is the main industry in Windsor? Automotive The 3 main auto companies are in Windsor and many of their suppliers as well.
We think your school may be even bigger than our area high school! How big is your area high school? We have more kids than the high schools in South Windsor. Massey is the public school and Holy Names is the Catholic school. There is also alternative high schools as well.
